Beautiful and strange

A storyline that jumps back and forth in time, complex characterizations, gorgeous artwork in a stark, hard-edged style, irezumi and shibari: what more could you want? If you don't have any reading knowledge of Japanese, you're most likely going to be lost plot-wise but if this art style appeals to you you'll be happy anyway. Oh, and did I mention the bondage?

As mentioned in previous reviews, half of the book is set in a modern setting and half in a feudal Japanese setting. The sex all sticks to a bondage theme, however. I love that the artwork looks crisp and 'solid,' it's not frilly, float-off-the-page stuff.

First book of Ogasawara Uki's Urakatana Kaminoki series. The artwork in this manga is terrific and the interactions between her characters are intense and graphic! However, the story is very convoluted and can be confusing. The dual timeline (feudal era and modern time) can get a bit overwhelming.
