If you're gonna try an 'original' series as opposed to doujinshi based on a fandom, you should give this a try. it has some angst, some sweet touching moments, and some really smutty scenes too. It's Kodaka... how can you go wrong?

This doujinshi series is about Kazama Ryuuji, the orphaned son of a ruined yakuza mob, and the shadows of the past that haunt his life.
Kodaka Kazuma gives the readers a view of a darker and more violent yakuza world than that found in Kizuna. Nevertheless the story is just as romantic in tone.
The second main character, Araki, is the last surviving member of the Kazama mob, who has devoted his life to protect Ryuuji.
This series is set about 8-10 years before Kizuna. In one of the volumes Araki and Ruuuji interact with several of the Kizuna characters, including Araki's younger brother Masa(nori), young Kai and Kai's father; the head of the Sagano clan.
I would reccoment this doujinshi series to anybody who likes Kizuna and (or) yakuza themed manga
